Dosen - Dosen

Chinese monk. Born in Xuzhou, Henan Province. Family name Wei. Later, he received the precepts from Johin of Daifukusenji Temple in Luoyang and learned about the Vinaya. He then studied Zen and Kegon Buddhism under Fujaku (651-739). In 733 (Tenpyo 5), Japanese monks Yoei (date of birth and death unknown) and Fusho (date of birth and death unknown) entered China and asked Dosen to transmit the precepts to Japan. He came to Japan on a Tang ship with Bodhisena of India and Buttetsu of Linyu (a country in the southeast of the Indochina Peninsula), and arrived in Dazaifu in May 736. He lectured on the Vinaya and the Bonmokyo Sutra at the Saitoin Temple of Daian-ji Temple in Nara, and gave precepts to many Japanese monks. In his later years, he suddenly retired to Hisoji Temple in Yoshino. He encouraged monks of the time to live in seclusion in the mountains. He wrote Annotated Bonmokyo Sutra and Shiki Tsuibukumon.
