770‐837? Arab lexicographer and jurist. Born in Herat to a Greek slave mother, he later studied in Basra, served Ibn Tahir (798-844?), and became a judge in Tarsus, Turkey. Of his more than 20 books on the Quran, hadith, jurisprudence, etc., five remain to this day. The most famous of these is the natural history dictionary Gharib al-muṣannaf, a large work that is said to have taken 40 years to complete and is composed of 1,000 entries and 1,200 illustrations.
