Arab lexicographer and jurist. Born in Herat to a Greek slave mother, he later studied in Basra, served Ibn Tahir (798-844?), and became a judge in Tarsus, Turkey. Of his more than 20 books on the Quran, hadith, jurisprudence, etc., five remain to this day. The most famous of these is the natural history dictionary Gharib al-muṣannaf, a large work that is said to have taken 40 years to complete and is composed of 1,000 entries and 1,200 illustrations. アラブの辞書学者，法学者。ギリシア人奴隷を母として，ヘラートに生まれ，のちバスラで学び，イブン･ターヒル(798‐844？)に仕え，トルコのタルススの裁判官となった。コーラン，ハディース，法学などに関する20種余の著書のうち5種が現存する。なかでも40年かかって完成したといわれる博物誌的辞書《Gharīb al‐muṣannaf》は有名で，1000項目，1200の例証からなる大著である。【池田修】
