A tribe that lived from the 10th century to the 16th century in a wide area in central Africa, from the southern end of Lake Chad, 40km east, 60km west, and 200km southeast across the Chari River. They built many settlements in various places and carefully buried their dead. According to legend, the Thao were "giants of fearsome strength." One theory is that this means that they were descendants of the tall Kushite people (Kush Kingdom) from the upper reaches of the Nile River. The Thao, along with their successors, the Kotoko, had a metalware culture, casting bronze products using the lost-wax method and also making iron products, most of which were ornaments.
