800 Women's Country - Happyakusokufukoku

Japanese: 八百媳婦国 - はっぴゃくそくふこく

A Tu lord state located outside the border of Yunnan during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. It is the Chinese name for the Lannathai Kingdom, founded in 1296 by King Manglai, centered around Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. The state was named the Eight Hundred Women's State because its chief had 800 wives, each of whom ruled over a fortress (zhai). Chinese historical documents state that the main inhabitants were the Bai Yi people, but they are said to have had close ties with the Tai Yuan and Tai Yai peoples. The Yuan dynasty established the Eight Hundred Tongsho Propaganda Office to govern this region, and sent an expeditionary force to the Eight Hundred Women's State during the Da De era (1297-1307), which was in conflict with the Tai and Xiao Cha Li states, which were also Thai tribes (the Da De War).

中国の元･明両代，雲南辺外にあった土侯国。タイ北部のチエンマイを中心に初代マンライ王が1296年に創建したラーンナータイLannathai王国の，中国での呼び名である。国名は，その首長に800人の妻があり，そのひとりひとりが一つのとりで(寨)を領していたので，八百媳婦国と呼ばれたという。中国史料には主たる住民は百夷と記されているが，タイ･ユアン族，タイ･ヤイ族などと深縁関係にあるといわれる。元はこの地方を治めるため八百等処宣慰使司を設置し，同じタイ系諸族の大･小車里国と紛争を続けていた八百媳婦国に大徳年間(1297‐1307)遠征隊を送った(大徳の役)。
