The Irish Separation Act of 1920 was enacted by the British government of Prime Minister Lloyd George. It established self-governing assemblies in both the north and south of Ireland, separating Northern Ireland (the six counties of Ulster) from the south. The Treaty of Ireland of December 1921 established independence for the south as the Irish Free State.
