Hong Ming-hee

Japanese: 洪命熹 - こうめいき

Korean independence activist. His pen name was Byeokchu. He was born in South Chungcheong Province. After the Japan-Korea Annexation (1910), he defected to China, where he became friends with independence activist Shin Chaeho and others. He participated in the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. He then served as editor-in-chief of the Dong-A Ilbo, president of the Jidai Ilbo, and principal of Osan School in the 1920s. He was a central figure in the Shinkanhoe movement, an organization for the national united front that began in 1927, but was arrested and imprisoned in 1929. After liberation, he participated in the North-South Joint Conference in 1948 and remained in the North. He served as vice prime minister of the Republic and chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland. He also wrote the novel Lim Kyojeong.

朝鮮の独立運動家。号は碧初。忠清南道生れ。日韓併合（1910年）後亡命した中国で独立運動家申采浩らと交友。1919年の三・一独立運動に参加。その後1920年代《東亜日報》主筆，《時代日報》社長，五山学校の校長などを歴任。1927年からの民族統一戦線組織〈新幹会〉運動の中心となったが，1929年検挙，投獄。解放後，1948年南北連席会議に参加し，北に残留。共和国副首相，祖国平和統一委員会委員長などを歴任。小説《林巨正》も著した。
