Korean independence activist. His pen name was Byeokchu. He was born in South Chungcheong Province. After the Japan-Korea Annexation (1910), he defected to China, where he became friends with independence activist Shin Chaeho and others. He participated in the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. He then served as editor-in-chief of the Dong-A Ilbo, president of the Jidai Ilbo, and principal of Osan School in the 1920s. He was a central figure in the Shinkanhoe movement, an organization for the national united front that began in 1927, but was arrested and imprisoned in 1929. After liberation, he participated in the North-South Joint Conference in 1948 and remained in the North. He served as vice prime minister of the Republic and chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland. He also wrote the novel Lim Kyojeong.
