A science that applies dental knowledge to help resolve legal issues. It is a branch of dentistry and, in a broader sense, a field of forensic medicine. It is also called forensic odontology. Teeth are the hardest tissue in the human body and are resistant to changes such as decay even after death. In addition, the way teeth grow and their shapes are very diverse, and because people generally visit dentists at a high rate, traces of treatment show even more distinctive findings. These characteristics of teeth are often used to identify unidentified people. For example, they are useful in cases of skeletal remains or bodies with advanced decomposition.
