Emission nebula
A diffuse nebula is one in which ionized gas emits light. It is often excited by ultraviolet light from a nearby hot star. When excited by a young, massive star, it is called an H II region, and when excited by a white dwarf, it is called a planetary nebula.

散光星雲のうち、電離したガスが光を放射する星雲。近傍にある高温の星からの紫外線によって励起される場合が多く、若い大質量星による場合はHⅡ領域、白色矮星の場合は惑星状星雲と呼ばれる。
