Radioactive Capture

When an atomic nucleus captures a neutron or alpha particle, the first step is for the two to combine to form a compound nucleus, which then enters an excited state. This excited energy can be released in the form of neutrons, alpha particles, or other particles, or as gamma rays. When gamma rays are emitted, this is called radioactive capture.

原子核が中性子やα粒子などを捕獲した場合，第一段階として両者が合体し複合核となり，核は励起状態となる．この励起エネルギーを放出する方法には，中性子，α粒子，そのほかの粒子を放出する方法や，γ線として放出する方法がある．とくにγ線が放出される捕獲の場合を放射性捕獲という．
