A marine animal belonging to the phylum Coelenterata, class Scyphomedusa, order Nektostomedusa, family Octopusidae. The umbrella is hemispherical and reaches a diameter of about 20 cm. In general, the umbrella is brown in various shades, with yellowish-white spots on top, but some are colorless or indigo-blue. The agar of the umbrella is thick but relatively soft. The umbrella is brown because many single-celled algae (zooxanthellae) live symbiotically in the agar. The lower part of the umbrella has eight oral arms, each of which is divided into three wings, a smooth upper arm and a lower arm with many small tentacles, small appendages, and a contracted mouth, and eight club-shaped appendages hang down from the lower arms. The hemispherical umbrella and the eight club-shaped appendages of this jellyfish resemble the mollusc octopus, hence the name. The umbrella edge is divided into 80 small petals, and each of the eight segments has one sensory organ. It is found mainly in summer in inland bays along the Pacific coast from Ibaraki Prefecture southward to the Ryukyu Islands. It is also found in the Malay Peninsula and other parts of the southwest Pacific. It is also known by local names such as Hachiman jellyfish and Toro jellyfish.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ハチクラゲ綱根口(ねくち)クラゲ目タコクラゲ科に属する海産動物。傘は半球状で直径20センチメートルほどに達する。一般的に傘は種々の程度の褐色で、その上に黄白色の斑点(はんてん)をもったものが多いが、なかには無色や藍青(らんせい)色のものもある。傘の寒天質は厚いが比較的柔らかい。傘の色が褐色なのは、その寒天質の中に多数の単細胞藻類（褐虫藻）が共生しているからである。傘の下部に8本の口腕(こうわん)があるが、これらはいずれも3翼に分かれ、滑らかな上腕と多数の小触手や小付属物、縮口などをもった下腕とに分かれ、下腕からは8本の棍棒(こんぼう)状の付属器が垂れ下がっている。このクラゲの半球状の傘と、8本の棍棒状の付属器をもつ形が軟体動物のタコに似ているのでこの名がついた。傘縁(さんえん)は80の小さな縁弁に分かれ、また各8分区に1個ずつの感覚器がある。茨城県付近以南から琉球(りゅうきゅう)諸島に至る太平洋沿岸各地の内湾などに、おもに夏季にみられる。マレー半島その他、南西太平洋各地にも分布する。ハチマンクラゲ、トウロウクラゲなどの地方名もある。
