Annaba - Annaba (English spelling)

A commercial and industrial city on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Algeria, North Africa. The capital of Annaba Governorate. Formerly known as Bône. Population 348,554 (1998), 442,230 (2008 census). It has flourished as a port city since ancient times, and during the French colonial period it developed as an export port for agricultural products from the agricultural region behind it (grains, citrus fruits, etc.) and mineral products such as iron ore from Ouenza, and a steelworks was also built. In recent years, the El Hajar Steelworks was built in the southern suburbs with technical assistance from Japan. A modern urban area is located around the port. An 11th century Islamic mosque remains in the old town. It is a key transportation hub and also has an international airport.
