A general term for the Aphelandra genus of the Aphelandaceae family. Evergreen shrubs or shrub-like herbs. About 200 species are distributed in tropical and subtropical America. The leaves are stalked, simple, and opposite, and form a four-ridged spike at the top of the stem. Those with beautiful colored bracts and those with highly ornamental leaf color are often cultivated. The main horticultural species are Aphelandra squarrosa , which has dark green leaves with white veins and bright yellow bracts, and Aphelandra aurantiaca , which has highly ornamental orange-yellow flowers. There are varieties of Aphelandra squarrosa such as 'Dania' and 'Silver Cloud'. It prefers high temperatures and humidity, and is generally cultivated in pots. In its native habitat, it grows under humid forests, and direct sunlight in summer can cause leaf burn, so be careful. If kept on the dry side in winter, it will overwinter at around 10℃. If the temperature is above 20℃, it can be propagated by cuttings. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
