Ibn Taghrībirdī

Around 1409-70
An Egyptian historian from the Mamluk period. His father was a Mamluk (military slave) from Asia Minor. He had early access to the Sultan's court, and studied Islamic studies, including history, under renowned scholars such as Maqrisi and Aini. He also showed talent as a soldier, and in 1445, as pasha, he was in charge of protecting pilgrims to Mecca. His main work is the chronicle "The Shining Star," which covers the period from the early Islamic period to the Mamluk period. He also wrote a voluminous collection of biographies, "The Pure Spring." マムルーク朝時代のエジプトの歴史家。父は小アジア出身のマムルーク(奴隷軍人)。早くからスルタンの宮廷に出入りし，マクリージーやアイニーなどの高名な学者に師事して歴史学をはじめとするイスラム諸学を修めた。また軍人としての才覚もあらわし，1445年にはパシャとしてメッカ巡礼団の保護に当たった。主著はイスラム初期からマムルーク朝時代に至る年代記《輝く星》。ほかに大部な伝記集《清浄な泉》がある。【佐藤次高】
