…The main official road in ancient Mutsu Province was the Tosando, which ran vertically through the province from Shimotsuke Province across the Shirakawa Barrier into Mutsu Province. The route was also called the Okudaido in the Middle Ages and was essentially unchanged. It first ran north along the Abukuma River valley, crossed Mount Atsukashi (Atsugashima) on the border between Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, and reached the provincial capital of Taga Castle. From there, it ran north along the eastern foot of the Ou Mountains to Hiraizumi, and then continued north along the Kitakami River to Ezo. …
