At the end of the 8th century BCE, the two major Euboean polises of Chalcis and Eretria fought over the possession of the Lelantos plain. It is believed that Samos, Erythrae, Corinth, Sparta, and Thessaly were on Chalcis' side, while Miletus, Chios, and Megara were on Eretria's side. This battle ended with a victory for Chalcis, but according to Thucydides, it was the first land war to divide Greece in two.
