...Moreover, after he became deaf at the age of 46 and began to devote himself to the Enlightenment, his paintings, with their sharp insight, innate folk spirit, outstanding technique, and tendency toward self-expression, became the forerunners of modern painting, including Romanticism and Expressionism. 19th century European art moved from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism, and its influence reached Spain as well, but the only notable painters of this era were F. de Madrasso, Eduardo Rosales (1836-73), M. Fortuny, and J. Sorolla, all of whom were active in the second half of the 19th century. However, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the Madrid School saw the active participation of I. Zuloaga and J. G. Solana, who followed in the bold footsteps of Goya, and the Barcelona School, which advocated Modernism and paid attention to the new trends in Paris, saw the active participation of Ramón Casas (1866-1932) and Isidro Nonell (1873-1911).
