...Reversibly blocking a portion of the peripheral nerve that transmits pain while the patient remains conscious and anesthetizing the area controlled by the nerve is called local anesthesia in the broad sense, or conduction anesthesia. On the other hand, local infiltration anesthesia, in which an anesthetic is injected into the surgical site itself, and surface anesthesia, in which an anesthetic is applied to the surface of the skin or mucous membrane, are generally called local anesthesia in the narrow sense. Conduction anesthesia, in which a local anesthetic is injected directly into the course of a peripheral nerve or nerve plexus to anesthetize the area controlled by that nerve, is also called nerve block. ...
