[The birth of high-rise buildings]
Structural engineers and architects such as WLB Jenney and LH Sullivan built a series of high-rise buildings in Chicago called the Chicago Construction, which replaced the traditional masonry construction method with Bessemer steel and cast iron, which had just been developed at the time, for structural members such as columns and pillars. These buildings were equipped with electric elevators and hydraulic elevators, which were just beginning to be used at the time, and completely changed the skyline of Chicago, which had previously been four or five stories high.
