…International Style Architecture
[Postmodernism]
The International Style became the mainstream for high-rise office buildings around the world, but from the 1960s onwards, voices began to emerge that disliked its uniform and impersonal space. Works such as Le Corbusier's Church at Ronchamp (1954), the Sydney Opera House (1956) designed by Jørn Utzon (1918-) of Denmark, and the National Gymnasium (1964) designed by Kenzo Tange, had already exhibited forms that could not be explained solely in terms of fulfilling their function, and in the 1970s the influence of American architect LI Kahn, who advocated the classical form that had been a tradition in design at the École des Beaux-Arts (national school of fine arts) in France, and PC Johnson, who revived symbolic expression in high-rise buildings with the AT&T Building (1978), grew stronger. The consistent theme of modern architecture, the expression of structural technology and the application of industrial production to architecture, gave rise to such expressions as the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Leicester (1959) designed by J. Stirling and the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1977) designed by Piano Rogers, but prefabricated buildings and industrialized building materials had already become a part of everyday life in developed countries.
