Giya de Pecador

Japanese: ぎや･ど･ぺかどる

One of the Christian editions published by the Society of Jesus in Japan. Printed in 1599 (Keicho 4) by the Japanese Collegio. The original was the Spanish friar Luis de Granada's Guia de pecadores (1555). This book is an abridged Japanese translation of the Portuguese Guia do pecador, and consists of two volumes, one above the other. It is the first book written in hiragana and kanji with Western characters and four Western abbreviations, such as deusu. As the title reads, "It is the ritual of guiding sinners to goodness," it was widely read by the educated Christian class as a book for cultivating faith.

日本イエズス会出版のキリシタン版の一つ。1599年(慶長4)日本学林(コレジヨ)で印刷。原著はスペイン人修道士ルイス･デ･グラナダの《Guia de pecadores》(1555)。本書はポルトガル語訳《Guia do pecador》の日本語抄訳で，上下2巻，2冊からなる。欧字欧文入りで，初めて，でうすなど4語の洋語略符号を交えた漢字ひらがな本。表題の下に〈罪人を善に導くの儀也〉とあるように，信仰修養の書として知識階層のキリシタンに広く読まれた。
