…An African political party formed in colonial French West Africa. In October 1946, the party held its founding convention in Bamako, the capital of French Sudan (now Mali), bringing together 800 African political leaders from around the country, and elected Houphouet Boigny (later the first president of Côte d'Ivoire) as its chairman. It subsequently played a central role in the region's independence movement.

In 1904, along with other French colonies in West Africa, it was incorporated into French West Africa, with its Governorate in Dakar, Senegal. After World War II, the independence movement was developed around Houphouet-Boigny, who rose to power based on a farmers' association formed mainly by coffee and cocoa growers. He was elected chairman of the African Democratic Union, which was formed in 1946 by bringing together political leaders from all over French West Africa, and he also founded the Democratic Party of the Côte d'Ivoire as its branch in Côte d'Ivoire.
