Stuyvesant, P.

…The Wall Street area is also the birthplace of New York. In 1623, the Dutch named Manhattan Island New Amsterdam and began colonizing it. In 1653, the Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant built a log wall to prevent pigs and goats from straying into the north side of the city. This is said to be the origin of the name "Wall Street."
