South Bend

An industrial city on the St. Joseph River in northern Indiana, USA. Population 105,000 (1994). French explorers arrived in the late 17th century, a fur trading post was established in the early 1820s, and the city's name, which means a bend in the river, was adopted in 1830. Located in an agricultural area, it is a center for the collection, distribution, and processing of agricultural products such as corn, wheat, and dairy products, and is also known for its diverse industrial production of agricultural, electrical, and transportation equipment. In the 19th century, it was particularly known for its production of horse-drawn carriages.
