An evergreen small shrub of the Ericaceae family. It grows on rocky areas in the alpine zones of central Honshu and north of Hokkaido, and is also found in the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. The stems are woody and branch out. The leaves are small and scale-like, growing densely like strings. In July and August, 2-3 cm long flower stalks emerge from between the leaves, and white, bell-shaped flowers bloom. The corolla is about 8 mm long, with five shallow lobes at the tip.
