Nazarene - Nazarene (English spelling)

Japanese: ナザレ派 - なざれは(英語表記)Nazarener
Nazarene - Nazarene (English spelling)

A group of German painters in the early 19th century who attempted to revive religious painting, modelled on the German Middle Ages and the early Italian Renaissance. Founded in Vienna in 1809 by Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869) and Franz Pforr (1788-1812), the group was established as a religious organisation in Vienna, and the following year moved to the abandoned monastery of San Isidore in Rome. Other members of the group included Peter Cornelius (1783-1867), Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1793-1872), Philipp Veit (1793-1877) and Wilhelm von Schadow (1789-1862), and they worked together as painter-monks, following the strict rules of Catholicism. People at the time mockingly called them Nazarenes, but they willingly adopted this derogatory term as their group name. Along with their return to the simplicity of the early Renaissance and their promotion of romantic emotion through color, their pioneering of monumental vision through mural painting, which revived the medieval spirit of collaborative art, was a valuable contribution to contemporary German art and had a major influence on German art in the second half of the 19th century.
