…Generally, it means the title or heading of a book, but in the Nichiren sect, the five characters of Myoho Renge Kyo or the seven characters of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo are called daimoku or odaimoku, and chanting them, that is, chanting, is at the center of faith and practice. Nichiren believed that the daimoku Myoho Renge Kyo is not just a title, but that it embodies the merits of the Lotus Sutra preached by Shakyamuni, and that by upholding and chanting it, all of Shakyamuni's merits are transferred to one's hands. He called it the daimoku of Honmon, and placed it at the center of his doctrine along with the Honmon's honzon and the Honmon's ordination platform. …
