The person responsible for managing the Ho, a unit of territory in the Middle Ages. Ho was generally established based on an application for development and with the approval of the Kokushu, but in such cases, the applicant for establishment and development was given the status of Hoji and took control of the Ho's administrative powers. If the Hoji was a feudal lord based in Kyoto, the local lord who undertook the development locally was appointed as Kumon. From the beginning of the Ho's existence, many of the Hoji were feudal lords based in Kyoto, and the most famous were Kanjinin Obetto Gyoen, who held the Hahakabe Ho in Tanba Province and Moritomi Ho in Omi Province, both of which were in the Gion Kanjinin territory, and Kantomi Ho in Wakasa Province, as well as Kantomi Otsuki Takamoto, who established Binpo no Ho for many Kanchu family territories.
