A collection of letters by Pascal. He wrote and published anonymously between 1656 and 1657 at the request of A. Arnauld, and compiled them into one volume in 1657 under the pseudonym Louis de Montaltes. The first ten letters were addressed to a "Friend in the Country" (Provincial), hence the name. The starting point of the writing was the controversy over Jansenism and the attack on Paul Royal, which was led by the Jesuits. Pascal defended Paul Royal and discussed the issue of grace (Letters 1-4, 17-18), and further attacked the Jesuits for their moral disorder resulting from their abuse of the law of inquisition (Letters 5-16), which caused a great public reaction.

パスカルの書簡集。A.アルノーの依頼を受けて1656‐57年にかけて匿名で執筆公表し，57年ルイ･ド･モンタルトの筆名で1冊にまとめられた18通の論争書。最初の10通が〈田舎の友(プロバンシャル)〉にあてられた形式を取っているのでこの名がある。執筆の出発点にあるのは，ジャンセニスム論争ならびにイエズス会を先頭とするポール･ロアイヤル攻撃である。パスカルはポール･ロアイヤル擁護の立場に立って恩寵問題を論じ(第1～4書簡，第17,18書簡)，さらに決疑法の乱用から生じたイエズス会の道徳観の乱れを攻撃して(第5～16書簡)，世論に大きな反響を呼び起こした。
