It is an evergreen small tree of the Caprifoliaceae family, reaching a height of 6-9m. It is widely distributed from the warm temperate zone to the subtropics of Asia. In Japan, it grows wild on the coasts of warm regions, but is also widely planted as garden trees and hedges, and is said to have fire-resistant properties due to its high moisture content. The leaves are oblong, 10-20cm long, thick, and glossy on the upper surface. In early summer, panicles appear at the ends of the branches, bearing numerous small white flowers. The fruits ripen red, and the beautiful drooping red spikes resemble coral. The wood has a fine grain, so it is used for lathe crafts.
