…China's first full-scale government-run military machinery factory was established by Li Hongzhang in 1865 (the 4th year of the Tongzhi era). It was established by merging the Shanghai Ocean Bureau established in 1862 and part of the Suzhou Ocean Bureau established in 1863, and merging it with the Qiji Ironworks (owned by the American company Thos. Hunt & Co. in Hongkou, Shanghai) which Shanghai Daotai Ding Ri Chang had purchased at the behest of Li Hongzhang. In addition, machinery purchased from America by Zeng Guofan at the behest of Rong Hong was also brought here. …
