This is an autobiography of Matsudaira Sadanobu, a politician of the late Edo period. The title is a four-character breakdown of the two characters of "Sadanobu." It is a biography that covers Sadanobu's life from 1758 (8th year of the Horeki era), when he was born into the Tayasu family of the Gosankyo (three branches of the Tokugawa clan), to his adoption into the Matsudaira family of Shirakawa, where he became the lord of Shirakawa Domain, and then became a senior councilor and carried out the Kansei Shogunate reforms, until his dismissal from his position in 1793 (5th year of the Kansei era). It details his upbringing, friendships, and the administration of the Shirakawa Domain, but the main focus of this book is the description of the Kansei reforms. This is clear from Sadanobu's own handwriting, which reads, "This letter should list all the descendants who will become senior councilors." It is an indispensable and important resource for elucidating the Kansei reforms and Sadanobu's ideas.
