Its origin is said to be from the early 11th century, when Guido D'Arezzo assigned six notes (ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la) that rise one note from C to the first syllable of each subsection of the poem Ut queant laxis (around the 8th century) of the St. John's hymn. There are other theories, however.
