This is a reflex reaction in which hitting the abdomen suppresses the heartbeat. Heart function is regulated reflexively by various afferent information. Important afferent information comes from intravascular baroreceptors, intravascular chemoreceptors, various internal organs, skin, eyes, etc. Friedrich L. Goltz (1834-1902) used a frog and found that the heartbeat slowed down or stopped when the abdominal wall was lightly tapped several times with tweezers or an appropriate stick.
