A port city on the Red Sea coast in southeastern Eritrea, on a par with Massawa. Population 50,000 (1992). Opened in the early 1960s. It has a capacity of several 10,000-ton ships, a warehouse of 50,000 square meters, and an oil refinery. The 850-kilometer highway that runs from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, through Dessie to the port of Assab was completed in the late 1950s as an important economic road, and is heavily used by freight trucks and buses.
