…As a man of letters, he often wrote numerous letters on behalf of his colleagues to the King of Spain and those responsible for colonial administration, in which he pointed out in frank terms the mistakes and shortcomings of the policies towards the natives, and severely criticized the injustice and tyranny of the general colonists. Furthermore, following orders from his superiors, he wrote the extensive History of the Church of the Indies in 1597, based on the materials of Motlinia and other pioneers. This book, which is useful for understanding the trends of the Mexica (Aztec culture) society before the conquest and the missionary and other societies of New Spain after the conquest, was first published in 1870 and reprinted in 1971. …
