Located in the southern part of North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Daegu is the third largest city in South Korea after Seoul and Busan. It has an area of ​​885.61 square kilometers and a population of 2,473,990 (2000). It is located in the Daegu Basin at the confluence of the Nakdong River and the Geumho River. It was promoted to a direct-controlled city in 1981 and a metropolitan city in 1995. Although it is administratively separate from North Gyeongsang Province, it is still the economic, cultural and transportation center of the province, and is also the provincial capital. The average annual temperature is 12.6°C, with monthly average temperatures of -1.6°C in January and 25.9°C in August. In August 1942, the city recorded the highest temperature in the country, 40°C. The annual precipitation is 979 mm. The surrounding area is famous for apples, and agriculture in the suburbs is thriving. Markets have developed since ancient times, and Daegu is one of the three largest markets along with Pyongyang and Ganggyeong. Daegu's commercial area extends to the three southern regions. It is also Korea's No. 1 textile industrial area, and the chemical and machinery industries are also well developed. The Gyeongbu Expressway passes through it, and it is also the starting point of the Guma Expressway and the Olympic Expressway to Gwangju. Kyungpook National University, Yeongnam University, and Keimyung University are located here.
