Around 1380 - 1471 German monk and religious thinker. Born in Kempen in the Lower Rhine region, he studied at the school of the Congregation of the Brothers of the Common Life in Deventer, and in 1399 entered the Augustinian monastery, where his brother Johannes, 15 years his senior, was the abbot. He became a priest in 1413 and spent the rest of his long life there. Although the debate has not yet been conclusively resolved, it is considered almost certain that he was the author of Immitatio Christi. In other words, it is assumed that four of the many treatises on devotional life that he wrote were compiled into one and passed down to posterity under this title.
