Thomas a Kempis

Around 1380 - 1471
German monk and religious thinker. Born in Kempen in the Lower Rhine region, he studied at the school of the Congregation of the Brothers of the Common Life in Deventer, and in 1399 entered the Augustinian monastery, where his brother Johannes, 15 years his senior, was the abbot. He became a priest in 1413 and spent the rest of his long life there. Although the debate has not yet been conclusively resolved, it is considered almost certain that he was the author of Immitatio Christi. In other words, it is assumed that four of the many treatises on devotional life that he wrote were compiled into one and passed down to posterity under this title.

ドイツの修道者，宗教思想家。ライン川下流地方ケンペンに生まれ，デーフェンターの共同生活兄弟会の学校で学び，1399年，15歳年長の兄ヨハネスが院長であったアウグスティヌス参事会の修道院に入る。1413年司祭となり，その長い生涯を同修道院のなかで送った。今日なお論争の最終的結着はついていないが，彼が《イミタティオ･クリスティ》の著者であることはほぼ確実視されている。すなわち，彼が書きのこした多くの信心生活に関する論考のうち，四つが一つにまとめられ，この表題の下に後世に伝えられたと推定される。
