It is also called Isoasobi or Isomatsuri. It is held from March to April in the lunar calendar, and involves gathering shells on the beach, eating kusamochi and other foods, and is often accompanied by a tradition of welcoming gods to the beach. In Amami and Okinawa, March 3 of the lunar calendar is called Hamauri, and people of all ages gather on the beach with food and drink, sing and dance, and spend the whole day having fun. On this day, it is said that one should not stay home and do any work, and there is a tradition that if one stays at home, they will be tricked by a snake called Akamata, or give birth to a snake's baby. In addition, in many places, the portable shrine carried to the beach at shrine festivals in various places is called Hamaori. It is said that today's clam-digging originated from such events.
