A former town in Nita District, eastern Shimane Prefecture. Occupying the upper reaches of the Hii River, the main settlement is Minari, where the Kisuki Line runs. It has long been a producer of Nita beef, and beef cattle fattening is thriving. Most of the area is forest, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. It is home to Oni no Shitaburui, a scenic spot and natural monument. In March 2005, it merged with Yokota Town, Nita District, to become a town, forming Okuizumo City. Area: 178.64 km2 . 島根県東部,仁多郡の旧町。斐伊(ひい)川の上流域を占め,主集落は木次(きすき)線が通じる三成(みなり)。古くからの仁多牛の産地で,肉牛肥育が盛ん。大半が森林で,シイタケの栽培も行う。鬼の舌震(したぶるい)(名勝・天然記念物)がある。2005年3月仁多郡横田町と合併し町制,奥出雲市となる。178.64km2。8768人(2003)。
