Oviedo's work, which justified the conquest of the Indies by the Spanish and belittled the abilities and culture of the Indians, was fiercely attacked by Las Casas, but the descriptions of the geography, flora and fauna of the Indies are extremely detailed and are therefore highly regarded as a work of natural history.
