East St. Louis

...Population: 368,000 (1994), metropolitan area population: 2.52 million (1992). Located in the eastern part of the state on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the metropolitan area extends into Illinois on the opposite bank, and has satellite cities such as East St. Louis. Located just downstream from the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, a trading post was established here by French fur traders in 1764, and the city was named after King Louis IX of France.
