A city in the north of Hiroshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies part of the Chugoku Mountains, and the lowlands are in the basin of the Saijo River, a tributary of the Gono River. The central settlement is on the river terrace of the Saijo River, and it developed as a market town. Along with the neighboring city of Miyoshi, it is the central city of the northern Bingo region, and is a transportation hub with the Geibi Line, Chugoku Expressway, Matsue Expressway, and National Route 183 passing through it. The Kishiwada Line also branches off from Bingo-Ochiai in the north. It has a strong rural feel, producing high-quality rice and sake brewing has been popular since ancient times, but in recent years, metal and electrical machinery industries have become the core of the city as factories have moved in with the development of the transportation network. Rouseki is produced at Shokozan in the north. It ranks first in the prefecture in gross production of eggs and dairy cattle. It is home to Hiroshima Prefectural University, and the national Bihoku Hillside Park opened in April 1995. Ueno Park is famous for its cherry blossoms. The area around Mt. Dogo and Mt. Hiba in the north is included in the Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. In March 2005, the towns of Soryo in Kono District, Saijo, Tojo, Kuchiwa, Koyasan, and Hiwa in Hiba District were incorporated. The area is 1,246.49 ^km2 . Population: 40,244 (2010).

広島県北部の市。1954年市制。中国山地の一部を占め，江の川(ごうのがわ)の支流西城(さいじょう)川の流域に低地がある。中心集落は西城川の河岸段丘上にあり，市場町として発達，隣接する三次市とともに備後(びんご)地方北部の中心都市で，芸備線，中国自動車道，松江自動車道，国道183号線が通じる交通要地。また北部の備後落合から木次線が分岐。農村都市の色彩が濃く，良米を産し古くから酒造が盛んであるが，近年は交通網の整備に伴う工場進出で金属，電気機械工業などが工業の中心をなす。北部の勝光山で蝋石を産出。鶏卵，乳用牛の粗生産額は県第１位。広島県立大学があり，国営備北丘陵公園が1995年４月に開園した。上野公園は桜の名所。北部の道後山や比婆(ひば)山一帯は，比婆道後帝釈(ひばどうごたいしゃく)国定公園に含まれる。2005年３月甲奴郡総領町，比婆郡西城町，東城町，口和町，高野町，比和町を編入。1246.49km²。４万244人（2010）。
