He led the conservative Senpo-tai (selected troops) and set up camp at Edo in Mine County, attempting to march to Akamagaseki, but was attacked by soldiers from the Kiheitai, Yocho-tai, and Odate-tai (shield troops) who were pro-shogunate forces, and was killed in battle in January 1820.
