…In 1900, the mine was taken over by Mitsui Mining, and it developed into the largest mine in the Chikuho coalfield, and the city became one of Japan's leading coal mining towns. In 1955, about 20 mines were in operation, the 658.4m-deep Ikari shaft was completed, and the population exceeded 100,000, but the subsequent coal rationalization policy led to the closure of all the mines by 1970, and the population plummeted. To promote the coal-producing region, many companies were attracted, including those in the cement, sewing, tile, cigarette filter, metal, and electrical industries, but most were small and medium-sized, and no major industry to replace the coal industry has developed. …

…炭鉱は1900年三井鉱山の経営となり，以後筑豊炭田最大の炭鉱に発展し，市は日本有数の炭鉱都市となった。1955年には約20鉱が操業，深さ658.4mの伊加利（いかり）立坑が完成し，人口も10万を超えたが，その後の石炭合理化政策によって炭鉱は70年までにすべて閉山し，人口も激減した。産炭地域振興のためセメント，縫製，タイル，タバコフィルター，金属，電機など多数の企業が誘致されたが，大部分が中小零細規模で，石炭産業に代わる有力産業は育っていない。…
