Also known as enterotoxin, it is an endotoxin secreted by intestinal bacteria. It is a protein toxin that is generally resistant to acid and alkali and is difficult to inactivate even with proteases. An example is cholera toxin. Toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus also belong to this category. Causative bacteria include Bacillus , Clostridium , Escherichia , Staphylococcus , and Vibrio .
