335 - 263 Greek philosopher from Kition, Cyprus. Founder of the Stoic school. Studied in Athens at a young age, and after attending the Cynic, Megarian, and Academy schools, he established his own philosophy and opened a school in the Stoa Poikile (Painted Colonnade) of the Agora. The name Stoa comes from this. He taught that the key to achieving true happiness is to align one's will with the divine wisdom that governs the universe. His practical philosophy had a major influence on the philosophy of late antiquity and the Renaissance. No writings remain other than fragments.
