A perennial plant of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). The leaves are even-pinnate compound with branched tendrils at the tip and large stipules at the base. There are 4-8 leaflets, elliptical or oval, with whitish-green undersides. Flowers appear in July-August in racemes in the leaf axils, with 10-30 flowers that start out yellowish-white and later turn yellowish-brown. The name was given because the color resembles the coat of a weasel and the legumes resemble cowpeas. It grows in grasslands and forest edges in the mountains and fields of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and is also distributed in Korea, China, and Ussuri.
