An annual grass of the Gramineae family (illustration) commonly found in forests in hilly and low mountainous areas. The Japanese name means ashiboso (thin legs) and comes from the very thin stem at the base. The stem is long and slender, creeping horizontally at the base, taking root at the nodes, bending and rising at the nodes, branching, and reaching a height of 40-70 cm. The leaves are sparse, thin, lanceolate, about 7 cm long and 1 cm wide, and form a long sheath at the base that encases the stem. From late summer to autumn, an inflorescence appears at the top of the stem, with 1-3 palmate clusters. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
