A residential and seaside resort city in southwestern California, USA. Population 87,000 (1994). Located on the west side of Los Angeles, facing Santa Monica Bay. Founded in 1875 as a resort town, the city saw an increase in the number of mansions owned by movie stars in the 1920s, and further developed with the establishment of the Douglas aircraft factory. Hotels and shopping districts adjoin beautiful sandy beaches and parks. The city was named by Spanish missionaries after Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine.
