Strong kozo paper is made in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture. There is no certainty about its origins. In ancient times, papermaking was popular in Kitakyushu, especially in Tsukushi, so the foundations for what is now known as Yame paper must have been there from an early time. According to local legend, Nichigen Shonin, a monk from Echizen Goka, restored Fukuoji Temple (Mizonokuchi, Chikugo City), which had been abandoned during the Bunroku period (1592-96), and, judging by the good quality water of the Yabe River and the abundance of paper mulberry, the area was suitable for papermaking, so he called three papermakers from his hometown and developed it into Mizonokuchi paper.
